Diplomacy is a strategic board game created by Allan B. Calhammer in 1954 and released commercially in 1959. Its main distinctions from most board wargames are its negotiation phases (players spend much of their time forming and betraying alliances with other players) and the absence of dice or other game elements that produce random effects. Set in Europe just before the beginning of World War I, Diplomacy is played by two to seven players, each controlling the armed forces of a major European Power. Each player aims to move his or her few starting units—and defeat those of others—to win possession of a majority of strategic cities and provinces marked as "supply centers" on the map; these supply centers allow players who control them to produce more units.



There are 56 land territories and 19 water territories. There are 34 territories that are supply centers. A power can have as many units as it has supply centers. All powers start with 3 supply centers, except Russia, which starts with 4. There are 12 neutral supply centers.


The units that a power can control are armies and fleets. Armies move on land and fleets move on water. Players capture supply centers by moving units onto them. The player who gets to 18 centers first ,which is the majority, wins.


The game has 3 phases a year spring, fall, and winter. spring and fall are diplomacy phases when players use their armies. After those phases their are retreat and build phases. Retreat phases are time for players who lost armies to move them or disband them. Build phases are in the winter when the powers are able to disband or build units depending on how many supply centers they have.
